54 Thrones — Product Development & Innovation Research
In April 2025, I presented a comprehensive Product Development & Innovation Trends analysis to 54 Thrones founder Christina Funke Tegbe. The research identified emerging consumer demand within African-inspired beauty, mapped key ingredient opportunities, and proposed three new hero product concepts to inform the brand's next major launch.
Market Opportunity
African-inspired beauty — or 'A-beauty' — is experiencing explosive global growth. In 2023, the global clean beauty market was valued at USD 8.25 billion, projected to grow at 14.8% CAGR through 2030, reaching USD 15.3 billion by 2028. Skincare comprises 40-42% of the entire beauty market — larger than makeup and hair care combined. 75%+ of Americans (84% of women under 50) view toxic ingredients as a serious concern. Cultural relevance and ingredient authenticity are the primary purchase drivers.
Key Ingredients + Innovation Opportunities
Marula Oil: lightweight, deeply hydrating, rich in antioxidants. In the Aja Luxury Face Oil. Opportunity: fermented marula SPF mist building on the marula-elephant folklore. Baobab Oil: rich in vitamins and omega fatty acids, improves elasticity, fades dark spots. In body butters and glow oils. Opportunity: brightening eye cream or dark spot serum.
Turmeric: brightening, anti-inflammatory, common in Somali and East African skincare rituals. In the Adwera Turmeric Glow Bar. Opportunity: Turmeric + Niacinamide serum targeting dark spots. Hibiscus: natural AHAs, known as the 'Botox Plant.' In body butters and body polish. Opportunity: facial exfoliating toner powered by Kenyan hibiscus.
Kigelia Africana: firms skin, evens tone, soothes inflammation. In the Nejma Balancing Night Oil. Opportunity: Kigelia-based SPF primer or firming serum. Moroccan Rhassoul Clay: detoxifying, rich in silica and magnesium, rooted in traditional hammam rituals. Not yet utilized by 54 Thrones. Opportunity: solid detox clay cleanser or 2-in-1 mask + cleanser bar — tactile, visual, perfect for TikTok.
Proposed New Product Concepts
1. Marula + Hibiscus Glow Mist SPF 30 — Facial mist that hydrates, sets makeup, delivers glow, and protects. Marula folklore meets the 'Botox plant' narrative: a viral content magnet. 2. Rhassoul Clay + Baobab Solid Cleanser Bar — Balm-bar cleanser that doubles as a detox mask for oily/congested skin. Inspired by Moroccan hammam tradition; tactile and visual. 3. Turmeric + Kigelia 'Golden Hour' Serum — Targets dark spots, inflammation, and texture with botanical alpha-arbutin and panthenol. The natural alternative to synthetic brighteners, positioned with African cultural credibility.
Consumer Trends
Skinimalism is reshaping routines — 40% of women now prefer multi-functional products with fewer steps. 54 Thrones already offers rich multi-use products; the next step is layering in SPF, actives, and new formats. TikTok and Instagram drive viral demand for ingredient-driven, story-rich beauty — brands that connect products to cultural heritage consistently win. Products tailored for melanin-rich skin with proven actives outperform: Topicals' 'Faded' hit 3x revenue growth and raised $10M in Series A funding.
